The short answer, before anything else: an AI-generated ad film starts at around ₹50,000 plus GST for 30 seconds of finished film. A conventional 30-second TVC in India starts at roughly ₹5 lakh and climbs from there.
That gap is real, and it is also easy to misread. It is not a discount on the same product. It is a different production model that removes one specific line item — the shoot — which happens to be the largest one. Everything else about making a good film still costs what it costs.
This is a straight explanation of where the money goes in each model, what AI genuinely makes cheaper, what it makes possible that money previously could not buy at all, and the places it still fails badly enough that you should not use it. We produce both kinds of film, so we have no particular interest in selling you one over the other.
What a conventional ad film actually costs in India
We have been producing ad films and TVCs in India for fifteen years, so these are our own numbers rather than someone else’s. A serviceable 30-second TVC starts around ₹5 lakh. Add a regional actor or a mid-tier influencer and you are at ₹30–50 lakh. A national celebrity puts production alone past ₹75 lakh — and that is before a single rupee of airtime.
The useful part is not the range, it is the split. Ad film budgets break down roughly as:
- Pre-production — about 25%. Scripting, storyboarding, casting, location recce, permissions, scheduling.
- Production — about 50%. Crew, camera and lens packages, lighting, art and set, equipment rental, transport, food, and a real cost attached to every single shoot day.
- Post-production — about 25%. Edit, colour grade, sound design, music, mastering.
Half the budget sits in the shoot. That is the number worth holding on to, because it explains everything that follows.
Where AI actually removes cost — and where it does not
AI video removes the production block. No crew call, no location fee, no equipment hire, no travel, no catering, no weather day, no permissions. For a film that would otherwise need two shoot days in a city you do not live in, that is not a marginal saving.
What it does not remove is the other half of the work:
- The script still has to be written. A model will generate whatever you ask for, competently and without judgement. Deciding what the film should say is unchanged.
- The shot list and look still have to be designed. This is the step most AI video skips, and it is the single clearest reason most AI video looks generic.
- Generation is selection, not creation. A usable ten-second sequence routinely takes many passes. The work is choosing and discarding, and it takes a person with taste.
- Edit, grade and sound are identical. Continuity across generated shots is harder than across filmed ones, and it is fixed in post by the same people using the same tools.
So the honest framing is not “AI films cost 90% less.” It is that roughly half the traditional budget disappears, and the remaining half is the half that decides whether the film is any good.
You will see claims of 80–90% cost reduction in a lot of AI video marketing. Treat them carefully: they compare generated output against a fully-crewed benchmark and quietly assume the creative labour costs nothing. Our own experience is more modest and more useful — a film that would have cost ₹5–8 lakh conventionally lands in the ₹50,000–1.5 lakh range, depending on length and complexity. That is still transformative. It is not 90%.
What actually moves the price
Four things decide where a film lands.
- Duration. Our starting rate covers 30 seconds of finished film. Longer runtimes scale, but not linearly — a 60-second film costs less than two 30-second ones, because look development is done once.
- Story complexity. A single hero product on a clean background is straightforward. A narrative with recurring characters, multiple locations and continuity across a dozen shots is a different order of work, and it is where generation costs multiply through retries.
- Revisions. A defined number of rounds is included. Changes of creative direction after look approval mean regenerating from an earlier stage.
- Versions and languages. This is where the model is at its most efficient. Additional aspect ratios, durations and language versions come off the same build, so they are priced as increments rather than as new films.
That last point matters more than the headline rate for anyone running paid media. Conventional production prices every version separately because every version needs its own edit and often its own shoot. If your performance calendar needs nine cuts of one idea, that is where the economics actually break in your favour.
The shots that were never a budget question — they were simply out of reach
The cost conversation is the one everyone has first. The more interesting one is about shots that no realistic budget was going to buy.
Sweeping crane moves, FPV drone descents, aerials, orbits around a moving product, seasons changing on cue, interiors that would need building — these historically required rigs, permits, helicopters or a VFX line item that killed them at the budget meeting. Current models understand the standard cinematographic vocabulary — pan, tilt, dolly, zoom, tracking, crane — because they were trained on vast amounts of real footage. Controllable camera movement is now an active research field in its own right, surveyed in depth in Camera Trajectory Generation (2026). Asked correctly, a model behaves like a trained camera operator.
The practical consequence for an Indian brand is this: the ambitious version of your idea is now the affordable one. The shot you cut from the treatment because it needed a crane is back on the table. A product that has not been manufactured yet can be filmed. A monsoon sequence can be shot in April.

Where AI video still fails
Any agency that tells you this format has no weaknesses is selling you something. The failure modes are well documented and consistent across models.
- Hands. Structurally difficult — extra fingers, joints bending the wrong way, proportions that drift. It compounds in video because the error must stay consistent across time. Anything involving detailed manual work is a risk.
- Faces over time. Identity drift is the standard problem: a face that is right in frame one shifts subtly by frame four. This is well enough established to have its own academic benchmark, which notes that models still struggle “to ensure coherence in appearance and attributes” across a sequence (Face Consistency Benchmark for GenAI Video). Short cuts hide it; long unbroken close-ups do not.
- Text. Signs, labels and packaging copy frequently render garbled. Any on-pack claim, legal line or logo needs to be composited in post rather than generated — never trusted to the model.
- Physics. Water, cloth and complex object interactions still read as approximations.
- Duration. Coherence degrades past roughly 30–60 seconds of continuous footage, which is why AI films are cut, not captured.
None of this rules the format out. It rules out specific briefs. We would not use AI for a customer testimonial — a real customer has to be a real customer — for a founder film where the founder’s actual face is the point, for anything documentary or journalistic, or for categories with strict regulatory rules on how a product may be depicted.
So will AI reduce your production costs?
Yes, on the films where it is the right tool, by roughly the share of the budget that the shoot represents. No, if you were expecting the creative process to become free, because the expensive judgement was never in the camera.
The more useful question is not “AI or not.” It is which of your next four films genuinely needs a shoot. In our experience it is rarely all four, and rarely none.
A reasonable split for a brand running a full calendar:
- Shoot it when a real person in a real place is the message — testimonials, founder films, launch events, anything where authenticity is the product.
- Generate it for product and concept films, pre-launch work, high-volume social and performance creative, multilingual versions of a core idea, and shots that were never affordable.
Most marketing teams have already reached this conclusion in practice. And once most of a market touches a technology, using it stops being a differentiator. How well you use it becomes the whole game — which is a question of direction and taste, not of tooling. The films that work are the ones where somebody decided what the shot should be before asking a model for it.

Additional aspect ratios, durations and language versions come off the same build and add little to that.
Can AI do camera moves that were previously too expensive?
Yes, and this is the format’s most underrated advantage. Crane moves, FPV drone descents, aerials, orbits around a moving product, seasonal changes and unbuilt sets previously needed rigs, permits or a VFX budget that killed them at the planning stage. Current models understand standard cinematographic language, so the ambitious version of an idea is often now the affordable one.
What can AI video not do well?
Hands and detailed manual actions, facial consistency across long unbroken shots, readable on-screen text and packaging copy, convincing water and cloth physics, and coherence beyond roughly 30 to 60 seconds of continuous footage. Text and logos are usually composited in post rather than generated.
Will an AI film look like AI?
Badly made AI video announces itself through drifting faces, inconsistent products and a particular plastic sheen. Well-made AI video does not, because the work goes into direction, shot selection and grading rather than into the generation itself. The honest test is to watch finished films and judge the output rather than the method.
Do we own the finished film?
Yes. You own the delivered film and its versions outright, as with any production. Usage rights and territory are confirmed in writing before work begins, and where a market or platform requires disclosure that a film was AI-generated, that should be raised with you up front rather than discovered later.
Can AI ad films be made in Hindi, Arabic or regional languages?
