How to Choose a Performance Marketing Agency

How to Choose a Performance Marketing Agency

Choose a performance marketing agency by testing how it defines the business result, verifies tracking, separates media and fees, plans creative, reads lead or order quality, and records the decisions made after each review. A performance marketing agency should be able to connect platform activity to the sales or commerce record you use to run the business.

Agree on the result before discussing channels

Write the event that matters: a paid order, qualified enquiry, booked appointment, accepted application or another recorded business action. Then define it in fields the agency and sales team can both recognise. A campaign can produce cheap forms while sending the wrong location, company size or intent.

Ask how the team works backwards from that result. The answer should connect offer, audience, page, form, follow-up and media. A platform campaign is one part of the route. The agency must show where its responsibility starts and ends and which records it needs from you.

Make tracking a live demonstration

Request a walk-through of the proposed measurement route. See the ad click, landing action, consent choice, event record, lead delivery and CRM field. Ask how duplicates, test leads, calls, offline outcomes and attribution gaps are handled. A slide saying tracking is included does not show that the route works.

Ownership matters here. The client should control the main ad, analytics, tag and CRM accounts, with the agency added at the right access level. Ask how changes are documented and how access is removed at handoff. This keeps history and audiences with the business.

Read the fee against the media band

DigiStreet Media charges the higher of 15% of monthly media spend or ₹50,000, plus GST. The ₹50,000 minimum applies through ₹3,33,333 of spend. The rate is 15% below ₹20,00,000, 10% from ₹20,00,000, 8% from ₹50,00,000 and 4% from ₹1,00,00,000, applied to the whole budget.

Whatever agency you assess, ask it to show media, management, production, landing page and software charges separately. Confirm whether the percentage covers the whole media budget and whether minimums or platform count change the fee. The performance marketing fee calculator gives a direct view of DigiStreet’s fee rule.

Working comparison

Use these criteria in every agency meeting

Selection test Evidence to request Decision
Business measure Written definition and source record Which outcome controls budget
Tracking Live route through page, event and CRM Who owns access and fixes
Commercial terms Media, fee, production and tools separated True monthly outlay
Creative Named work and replacement plan Capacity for original concepts
Review Sample report with assigned actions Who changes what and when

Creative capacity is part of media management

Campaigns need fresh angles, formats and proof. Ask how many original concepts and variations are included, who produces them, what source material is needed and how quickly replacements can be approved. A media team with no route to new creative can diagnose fatigue without being able to act on it.

Review real ads rather than a mood board. Ask why the opening line, image, offer and destination were chosen. The Fund Abroad example below is published client work that can support that discussion. The Fund Abroad performance marketing case study case page contains more context and creative material.

Lead quality must return to campaign decisions

For lead generation, ask how sales dispositions reach the media team. Relevant, wrong area, low intent, duplicate and qualified should have agreed meanings. A weekly file or CRM view can be enough when it is consistent. Without this loop, the agency can only reduce the cost of a form submission.

For ecommerce, ask how cancellations, returns, repeat orders and product margin affect reporting. Revenue inside an ad platform is not the same as settled profitable revenue. The agency should explain which business record is used for budget decisions and how often it is reconciled.

The first review should produce actions

Ask to see a sample report and listen for decisions. A useful review says which audience, search term, placement, creative, offer or page changes next, why it changes, who owns the work and when the effect will be checked. A long dashboard with no assigned action is a reading session.

The cadence should fit spend and sales speed. Daily safeguards can catch broken tracking or runaway spend. Weekly working reviews can handle tests and quality. Monthly commercial reviews can connect media to pipeline or settled orders. The scope should name each level rather than promise constant monitoring.

Run the handoff test before you hire

Ask what you receive if the engagement ends. You should retain account access, campaign history, audiences where platform terms allow, tracking documentation, creative files covered by the agreement, landing page access and current reports. The contract should explain notice, final reporting and outstanding production work.

References and case studies are more useful when questions are specific. Ask about access, reporting clarity, response to weak lead quality and the speed of creative changes. The performance marketing cost guide explains paid-media fees and budgets, while the case-study hub hub provides published client work for a wider evidence review.

Use a short audit of the working relationship

Give the shortlisted team one anonymised week of campaign and sales information where practical. Ask what it would investigate first and what it would leave unchanged until more evidence exists. You are listening for prioritisation. A team that proposes ten changes at once may remove the ability to learn which change mattered.

Ask who can make each kind of decision. Bid and budget adjustments, tracking repair, page edits, creative production and offer changes often sit with different people. The agency should show its internal owner and the client input needed. A decision map prevents a weak page or delayed creative from being described only as a media problem.

Set an approval threshold for spend movement. Daily adjustments within an agreed range may sit with the agency, while larger changes need written approval. Record platform, campaign and monthly limits. This gives the team enough room to manage without turning the client budget into an open instruction.

Review data retention and privacy steps that affect the campaign route. Ask what information enters forms, analytics and the CRM, who can see it, and how test records are handled. The agency should work with the client’s consent and access requirements rather than adding tools without an owner.

End the selection meeting with the first thirty days in writing. It should cover access, tracking checks, business definitions, creative inventory, active campaign review, landing pages and the first reporting dates. The plan is not a result forecast. It is evidence that the team knows what must be understood before it starts moving money.

Check how the agency handles an account incident. A rejected payment, disabled ad, broken page or missing lead connection needs a named alert route and owner. Ask what the team checks first, who contacts the platform or developer, and how lost time is recorded. The answer shows whether operational problems receive disciplined attention beyond routine optimisation meetings.

Four checks before approval

Turn the brief into decisions you can verify

Define one business result

Use the same definition across media and sales.

Watch the tracking route

Do not accept a setup promise without a demonstration.

Separate every cost

Keep media, fee, production and tools visible.

Read the handoff clause

Confirm access, history, files and final reporting.

Published client work

Fund Abroad work gives the creative review evidence

This Fund Abroad deadline creative is a real asset from DigiStreet’s published performance marketing case study. It gives buyers a specific ad to examine for offer, urgency, copy hierarchy and destination fit.

The new draft is based on the subject of the existing published performance-agency article, post ID 5701930. That source remains untouched. This version applies the current criteria, pricing and evidence rules in a separate draft.
