Website Design for Small Business

Most small businesses are sold more website than they need, or less than they can use. This page is the honest version: what a builder covers, where it stops, and what a professional build is actually for.

Start here: do you actually need an agency?

A straight answer before a sales pitch. Most small businesses fall into one of three situations.

Situation 1

A builder is genuinely enough

Five pages, no integrations, no serious search ambition, and someone in the team who enjoys fiddling with it. Wix or Squarespace will do the job for a few thousand rupees a year. Use them.

Situation 2

A builder will hold you back

You need to rank for specific searches, connect to a CRM or inventory, take payments properly, or publish regularly. This is where builder sites hit a ceiling — usually about a year in.

Situation 3

You already hit the ceiling

The site loads slowly, cannot do what you need, or was abandoned by whoever built it. The work here is a rebuild plus a redirect map, so the search visibility you already earned survives the move.

What a small business build includes

No bundles that quietly exclude the parts you will inevitably need.

01

Scoping

Sitemap, page content plan and the searches you want to be found for, agreed before design starts.

02

Design and build

Responsive design and development, tested across devices, browsers, speed and accessibility.

03

Search foundations

Structure, metadata, schema and speed handled during the build, not sold back to you afterwards.

04

Handover

Training so your team can edit it, plus the code, domain and content in your name. Not ours.

Everything is yours. Code, domain, hosting and content stay in your name. If you ever want to move to another agency, you can, without asking us for permission. Being locked out of your own website is a genuinely common problem in this market.

The platforms we build on

We are not a WordPress shop, or a Shopify shop. We choose the platform from the brief — and here is how that decision actually goes.

WordPress

Most builds

Content-led and corporate sites, multilingual builds, anything your own marketing team needs to edit without calling us. Custom themes rather than marketplace templates.

WooCommerce

Commerce

Commerce layered onto WordPress. The right call when the catalogue sits alongside a lot of content, or when you want to own the whole stack rather than rent it.

Shopify

Commerce

Commerce-first businesses where payments, inventory and checkout should be someone else’s problem. Faster to launch, less flexible outside the cart.

Webflow

Design-led

Design-led marketing sites that need to look exact and change often. Excellent for brand and campaign sites, limited once real business logic is involved.

Wix and site builders

When it fits

We will say it plainly: for a five-page brochure site with no integrations, a builder is enough and we will tell you so. We take over when you outgrow it.

Custom development

Applications

Portals, dashboards, configurators, ERP and CRM integrations — where the business logic is the product and forcing it into a CMS costs more than building it properly.

We pick the platform after the scope, not before. An agency that builds everything on one system will recommend that system regardless of fit. It is why MAS Recovery, a US healthcare firm operating since 1999, runs on a hand-built static site with no CMS at all.

The stack underneath

Platforms are the surface. When a brief needs custom work — a portal, a dashboard, a configurator, an integration — this is what it is built with.

PHP

Server-side core

Laravel

PHP framework

React

Interactive front end

Next.js

React framework, SSR

Node.js

APIs and services

MySQL

Data layer

Why this matters to you and not just to developers. A WordPress site is PHP underneath, which is why we can extend it properly rather than bolting on another plugin. And when a page needs to behave like an application — live pricing, a product configurator, a dashboard your customers log into — React and Next.js are how that gets built without abandoning the site you already have.

Built to be found, not just built

A website nobody finds is an expensive brochure. Search, answer engines and structured data are part of the build here, not a separate project sold afterwards — because search is what we do for the rest of our clients every day.

SEO

Search foundations, during the build

Crawlable structure, clean URLs, internal linking, metadata, image alt text and a redirect map on launch. Retrofitting this after a site ships costs more and works less well.

Schema

Structured data as standard

Organization, Product, Review, FAQ, Breadcrumb and Video schema implemented and validated — not a plugin switched on and never checked. It is what makes star ratings, prices and FAQs appear in results.

AEO

Answers machines can read

Specifications as HTML rather than PDFs, real FAQ blocks, definitions and figures stated plainly. AI assistants cite pages that answer directly; they skip pages that gesture at an answer.

GEO

Built to be cited

Entity clarity, consistent naming, published author and organisation detail, and claims backed by numbers. This is what decides whether a generative engine names you or a competitor.

Performance

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Passing PageSpeed rather than merely looking finished. Slow sites lose rankings and conversions in the same motion.

Analytics

Measurement that survives

Analytics, conversion tracking and Search Console configured at launch, so you can tell what the site actually did rather than guessing three months later.

We do this for ourselves first. digistreetmedia.com carries Product, Review, FAQ, Breadcrumb and Video schema, a custom video sitemap, and star ratings in Google results — and we have been cited in Google’s AI Overview for our own category.

Small Business Website Design — FAQs

If you need a simple brochure site, have no integrations and no serious search ambition, yes — use a builder and spend the money elsewhere. The ceiling arrives when you need to rank for competitive terms, connect other systems, or publish at volume. Most businesses hit it about a year in.

Professional builds start at ₹2,00,000 plus GST. Below roughly a lakh you are generally buying a marketplace theme with your content dropped in, which is fine for some businesses and limiting for others. The honest question is not what it costs but what you need it to do.

Four to eight weeks for a straightforward business site. The variable is rarely development speed — it is how quickly content, images and approvals come back from your side. Projects that stall almost always stall there.

Yes. Code, domain, hosting and content stay in your name. We think this should be standard, but it is worth asking any agency directly, because being locked out of your own site is a common and expensive problem.

Search foundations are part of the build — structure, metadata, schema and speed. Ongoing SEO is a separate service, and for a genuinely small business we will tell you honestly whether it is worth starting yet or whether the money is better spent elsewhere first.

We audit it before proposing anything. Sometimes the answer is a rebuild; often it is a smaller fix to speed, structure or content. We would rather do the smaller job well than sell you a rebuild you do not need.

A short conversation is usually enough to tell whether you need a builder, a rebuild, or just a few fixes.
