Generative engine optimization is the work of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini — rather than ranked in a list of links below them.
It matters because the answer increasingly is the result. When someone asks an assistant which agency to shortlist, being on page one of a traditional search is no longer the thing that decides whether you are mentioned.
How GEO differs from SEO
They share foundations and diverge on the goal.
- SEO optimises for a ranked position. Success is a click.
- GEO optimises for being quoted. Success is a mention inside an answer, whether or not anyone clicks.
That difference changes what good content looks like. A page written to rank can hedge, build up slowly and reward the visitor who scrolls. A page written to be quoted has to state things plainly, attribute them, and be extractable in a sentence or two.
The relationship with answer engine optimization is close enough to cause confusion. AEO is usually framed around direct question-and-answer retrieval; GEO around being synthesised into generated prose. In practice most programmes run both, and the underlying work overlaps heavily.
What generative engines actually reward
Specificity over adjectives
“We deliver exceptional results” is unquotable. “Organic traffic grew from 937,815 to 6,238,985 visitors in twelve months” is a sentence a model can lift and attribute. Vague marketing language is invisible to this channel — not penalised, simply useless.
Structure a machine can parse
Clear headings, short self-contained answers, tables for comparisons, and specifications as crawlable HTML rather than buried in a PDF. A page that requires a human to infer the answer from context will rarely be cited.
Corroboration elsewhere
Models weigh whether a claim appears in more than one place. Mentions on review platforms, directories, industry publications and third-party listings matter more here than they do for classical rankings, because they are what turns a claim into a consensus.
Freshness on time-sensitive topics
For anything where the answer changes — pricing, regulations, tooling — stale pages get passed over. A post titled for a year that has passed signals staleness even when the content is sound.
What a GEO programme involves
- An entity audit. What do the major models currently say about your brand, and is any of it wrong? Most brands have never checked, and a surprising number find inaccuracies.
- Content restructuring. Rewriting key pages so each answers one question directly, with figures and sources attached.
- Structured data. Organization, Service, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup so machines can read the relationships without inferring them.
- Off-site consistency. Making sure your description, categories and claims match across the places models draw from.
- Monitoring. Tracking whether you appear in answers for the questions that matter, which is a different measurement problem from rank tracking.
How to measure it honestly
This is where most claims about GEO fall apart. There is no equivalent of a rank tracker with a clean position number, and anyone offering one is oversimplifying.
What can genuinely be tracked:
- Citation presence. Ask the models a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule and record whether you appear, and how you are described.
- Referral traffic from AI sources. Small but growing, and visible in analytics as its own segment.
- Branded search volume. Being mentioned in answers tends to lift people searching for you by name afterwards.
- Assisted conversions. Buyers who arrive already knowing what you do, having been told by an assistant.
Be sceptical of any agency quoting a precise “GEO ranking”. The measurement is real but it is directional, and honest reporting says so.
Why this is an unusually open opportunity in India
Search Console data across our own site shows a pattern worth noting: 588 queries about AEO, GEO and AI search visibility produced 13,175 impressions and 6 clicks at an average position of 39.7. Real demand, almost entirely unserved, in a category where very few Indian brands have published anything specific.
The queries themselves are unusually long — people ask full questions rather than typing keywords. That favours content built around genuine answers over content built around keyword density, and it means a well-made page can be cited without heavy link building.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is generative engine optimization?
The practice of getting a brand cited inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini — rather than ranked in the links below them. Success is being quoted, not clicked.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimises for a ranked position and a click. GEO optimises for being synthesised into an answer. They share technical foundations, but GEO rewards specific, attributable, extractable statements where SEO tolerates content that builds up gradually.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO is usually framed around direct question-and-answer retrieval; GEO around being woven into generated prose. Most real programmes cover both, and separating them matters less than doing the underlying work.
Can GEO results be measured?
Directionally, yes. You can track whether you appear in answers to a fixed set of buyer questions, referral traffic from AI sources, branded search volume and assisted conversions. There is no clean position number equivalent to a rank tracker, and any agency quoting one is oversimplifying.
Do I still need SEO if I invest in GEO?
Yes. Generative engines draw heavily on content that already ranks and on sites they can crawl and trust. Technical SEO, crawlability and authority remain prerequisites rather than alternatives.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Content changes can be reflected in AI answers within weeks, which is faster than classical rankings. Building the off-site corroboration that makes a claim stick takes considerably longer — several months at least.
What does a GEO engagement cost in India?
It is usually run alongside SEO rather than sold separately, because the foundations are shared. Our GEO work starts within an SEO retainer from ₹75,000 a month, with scope confirmed after an entity audit.
